AI Meets the Islands: Shaping the Future of Faroese in the Digital World
Dávid í Lág (b. 1978, Tórshavn) holds a master's degree in Computer Science from the IT-University of Copenhagen, with a specialization in business analytics with machine learning, big data, and intelligent systems development. He has several years of industry experience in Copenhagen and Tórshavn and has worked as an application consultant and analyst at the National Hospital of the Faroe Islands a number of years. Currently, he is pursuing a Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of the Faroe Islands, where his research focuses on language technology—specifically, Automatic Speech Recognition for Faroese using the latest AI-based methods and architectures. His research contributes to pushing the boundaries of what is known in Faroese language technology, advancing both theoretical understanding and practical applications in this low-resource linguistic domain. At the university he also teaches Machine Learning in the university's Master’s programme in Data Science. Dávid is passionate about conducting research on AI approaches for low-resource languages and is committed to promoting language technologies by developing open-source models that are accessible, freely available, and designed for widespread adoption.
